Let us rise up and build
Carnikava church!

Our historic Carnikava church in Latvia, the oldest wooden church in Vidzemes seaside, built in the 18th century, has been completely burnt to the ground by suspected arsonists and so the parish is kindly asking for your help and support.

The Pastor of Adazi Lutheran community which is in The care of two Churches Adazi and Carnikava, Ivars Jekabsons, broke the sad news that in the early morning hours of the 10th of December, which was the morning of the 2nd Advent Sunday, the historical wooden church at Carnikava near Siguli was burnt to ashes. The restoration of this unique historical church had just been completed with only a few minor interior finishing touches remaining. The plan was to have it ready for services in 2018 when Latvia will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

This is not just a loss to the Parish of the Carnikava church but it’s a loss to the whole historical heritage of Latvia and Europe.

The flames of the fire didn’t just destroy the church, but it also burnt away the fruits of the hard work and efforts of many people who had co-operated in restoring the old church. We can thank God however that no one was hurt in the fire. Pastor Ivars Jekabsons commented that the church has been burnt and we can’t bring it back, however a church is not just the walls of a building, church is Christ, the light and love of life itself.

We are immensely grateful for all the prayers and good wishes of so many people during this difficult moment.

After the tragedy, the archbishop of the Latvian Lutheran Church commented: during these testing times, let’s remember the promise of Jesus Christ that the gates of hell will never claim His church. Even if the building has perished, the parish is still alive. This is not the first time that the House of the Lord has been burnt. With the help of God and the support of people’s good will, it will be built again. Let’s stand side by side with the parish of Adazi in support, prayers and donations.

The Parish of Carnikava church, together with the support of the local municipality and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia is ready to build a new church.

A fund-raising campaign has already begun. Please help us to raise money to re-build our church. With gratitude, in His Service.
